The music was pretty good, and I liked the sound effects (especially Diddy scratching his head). There were a lot of secret areas, but some of them were almost too well hidden (I still have 2 to find, after all these years). But if you look deeper, you will find that this game is still a regular platform game. And since graphics sell, this game shot up the sales charts. Many people said, "Wow this is 16 bit?" when it came out. The first thing you will notice is how amazing the graphics are. This game was released at the peak of the 16 bit era, and it showed off what the SNES could do, and would tip the tides of the 16-bit war to Nintendo's side.
